Tips on "Protecting You & Your Scrip Program"
What happens when you have a gift card and the waitress or cashier tells you that it's not good?
When using a gift card to pay for your purchase and the cashier tells you that your card has a $0 balance or is not activated, be pro-active! By following these simple steps you can eliminate any questions about balances or activation!
First, do not allow them to throw the card away. Most cards have a 1.800 number on the back that will give you a balance and a history of the card usage.
Second, if using more than one card, be sure you hand the cashiers one card at a time. After the card is swiped and the balance applied, make sure that they throw the card away. If you are swiping your own cards, after the card is swiped and the balance applied to your purchases, be sure that you throw the card away or mark card with a $0 balance (use a sharpie marker).
Third, keep your receipts. This is especially important in a restaurant situation where you are more likely to hand multiple cards to the waiter/waitress. Count your cards before you hand them over. If you encounter a problem, check the receipt to be sure the card they return to you as "bad" was not swiped twice; the receipt will show the card numbers and subtract the amount of cash applied from each card to your total billed amount. In most cases you can actually get a history instantly by calling the 800 number listed on the back of your card. Have the waiter call the manager if needed.
And last, if a balance remains on the card, use a sharpie pen to record the balance on the card until it is depleted. Then throw away card or recycle with garbage.

As an OLV family, you simply purchase gift cards through our school
from the order form that is sent home and/or posted here
each week. Send the completed order form with payment
to school through your child's weekly folder and your purchase is delivered
in the same way. OLV earns a percentage from the sale of the cards.
How is it Free Money?
Scrip is considered "Free Money" for the school because you purchase
cards for things you're going to buy anyway. For example: Let's
say you do your weekly grocery shopping at Kroger and you usually spend
$20.00 or more. Purchase a $20.00 gift card through Scrip (cost
= $20.00). Use the $20.00 gift card toward your next grocery trip. You
spent no additional money and OLV earned $.80 - Free!
It All Adds Up!
Four percent of a $20.00 gift card may not seem like much but it adds
up. We ended last year with a $11,000.00 profit. If each OLV
family purchases as little as $25.00 each week (1 card), we can double
our profit from last year!
Scrip Ideas
In addition to purchasing cards to do your routine grocery shopping
and filling the car(s) up with gas each week her are some additional
ideas of how you can use Scrip:
- Home Projects –Plan ahead and buy
your Home Depot and Lowe’s
SCRIP cards.
- Put aside for Christmas Shopping – Buy
one Toys 'R Us card each week for the next 15 weeks and you will have
$375 to spend for Christmas and won’t
have to put it on your credit card
- Alleviate Last Minute Shopping -
Buy a single card each week and put it away to use as gifts for those
birthdays, anniversaries and other special events that seem to creep
up on you!
- "Double Dip" with Kroger Commitment
Cards.
- Enlist Outside Reinforcements - Many of our vendors are national
chains - get out-of-town relatives and friends to buy cards through
us so that we make the profit
- Give the Perfect Gift - Buy a gift card for that “hard to shop
for person”
