Historic Sites of Georgia -Travel Activity

This project requires each student to visit one of the historic sites listed below and prepare a tri-fold poster or power-point presentation as well as a book report on the subject of their visit.

Historic sites and required readings for each:

1. Warm Springs Georgia site of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s’ Little White House and Warm Spring facility.

2.** Andersonville Civil War Prison, Andersonville 

              A. Students must read the book Red Cap by Clifton Wisler and prepare a book report.

3. The Chief Vann  House in Chatsworth, Georgia and the New Echota State Historic Site in Calhoun, Georgia

              A. Students must do a book report on the Cherokee Indians

4. Etowah Indian Mounds in Cartersville, Georgia

              A. Students must do a book report on the Early Native Americans, The Mississippians, who were the early mound builders.

5. The Jarrell Plantation in Juliette, Ga. This is a well-preserved cotton plantation.

6. The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia.

              A. Students must do a book report on the importance of the Railroads during the Civil War and why they were important to Atlanta during the Civil War.

7. Cyclorama, Atlanta, Ga.

              A. Students must read a book on the Battle of Atlanta or Civil War book that features the Battle of Atlanta.

8.** Historic Savannah and Fort McAlister, Brunswick, Ga. 

              A. Students must read a book on the early Georgia history involving Savannah or a Civil War book about General Sherman’s “March to the Sea”.

9. The King Center, Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, Atlanta, Ga.

              A. Students must read a book on the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and prepare a book report.

10.** Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, Plains, Ga.

** These indicate sites that require about 3 hours or more of driving, so you can plan your trip accordingly.

     You may want to car pool with other students who have selected the same topic.

This project requires the following, which will be due on the completion date.

3.You have two choices for your presentation to the class:

Requirements for the tri-fold or power point presentation are as follows:

a. You must have a minimum of 8 photographs in your presentation with a

    description of each one.

 

1. Information obtained at the site such as postcards, informational flyers, etc.

      2. Material that relates to your topic and would be a good visual for

      your presentation.

4.   Your oral presentation should last about 3minutes.
