Introduction to Social Studies
As we begin a new year I am excited to get started with our students here at OLV. One of the areas I hope we can improve on our organization skills, as last year many of our students struggled with this. In my social studies classes I have asked that the students keep all notes, class work, homework, maps, tests and review sheets in their notebook using sheet protectors. I think this will help them keep their work organized.
6th Grade:
In the 6th grade we will be studying the Eastern Hemisphere this year as we go through Europe, Africa and Asia. We will be doing an extensive world map project in class as we work to improve our map skills. 6th Grade will also be doing a project at the beginning of the second quarter on a country in the world. There will be a rubric posted soon on my web page, please check back for this. I will also be sending a rubric home with your child.
7th Grade:
In the 7th grade we will be studying United States History and Georgia History up to 1860. This is a change for the 7th grade as the Archdioceses has changed the curriculum and we have two years to implement the changes into our curriculum. We will have two projects this year. One will be before Christmas and the other will be after Christmas. . There will be a rubric posted soon on my web page, please check back for this. I will also be sending a rubric home with your child.
8th Grade:
In the 8th grade we will be studying United States History and will begin with the early beginnings of our country’s origins. The 8th Grade will also be doing a project at the beginning of the second quarter on one of our states. There will be a rubric posted soon on my web page, please check back for this. I will also be sending a rubric home with your child.

Geography Bee
Students can use the National Geographic website to take daily Geo quizzes to prepare for the Geography Bee which will be in the Spring of 2008.
“Where in the world is Mr. Crane?”

Where in the world is Mr. Crane will continue again the year, as the students really seemed to enjoy this activity. I have already had several students ask me when we are going to start this back up. Please take every opportunity to use geography when you can with your children. I am still surprised from time to time about some things we don’t know about our own country, but also amazed at times with the wealth of experience many of our students have had in their travels around the world.
