Accelerated Reader
Reading Safari
Dear Parents,
The Accelerated Reader incentive program, sponsored by the Media Center for this year, has been designed to encourage all students to participate. Goal levels are such that students who may read on a developing level or are reluctant to read will feel encouraged to at least pick up a book. Those who are advanced readers will also have some incentives. The philosophy is that the AR program exists to encourage students to read books, nurture a love for reading and develop a level of confidence in reading ability. The point system and goal levels for the program are as follows:
Using our "Reading Safari" theme:
All students receive a certificate for reaching each Reader level. The levels are Super, Advanced, Star and Classic Reader. In addition to receiving a certificate, Classic Readers receive an additional prize at the end of the school year.
Reader levels are as follows:
Class |
Super
Reader |
Advanced Reader |
Star

Classic Reader |
Kindergarten |

100 points |
Kindergarten, first and second grade books generally are worth 0.5 points. So to earn 1 point the child needs to successfully pass 2 quizzes.
In conclusion, my philosophy is that students should enjoy coming to the library and checking out books they like, but they should also be checking out books that are on their level and help with their reading skills. That is why I encourage the children to check out at least one “dot book,” (an AR book) using the “Fiver Finger Rule”.
The dot system is as follows:
Dark green |
Kindergarten/First |
Yellow |
Second |
Red |
Third |
Blue |
Fourth |
Orange |
Fifth |
Light green |

Please feel free to request a copy of Accelerated Reader titles that the school owns on your child’s reading level or review the list accessible on the Media Center’s website.
