Battle of the BooksGeneral InformationParticipating Grades: Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Competitions:
Book Lists: Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth
Battle of the Books is a reading comprehension competition where students form teams of 3 or 4 players, are given a list of books to read and compete as teams, to test reading comprehension. After teams have been formed, students divide reading lists among team members and assign titles to read. As students are reading they may either write summaries, questions or reviews to help them learn book content. Ms. Williams and the teachers will keep track of what books have been read. Students will compete against teams only on their grade level during the last week of April. The winning team from each grade will travel to Jude the Apostle Catholic School on May 8th to compete against other teams from across the Archdiocese. Students are asked "Jeopardy" style questions about the books they have read. For example, "In this book a boy is rescued from a sinking boat by a horse." The team members would consult each other and, before 30 seconds is up, the team captain would answer with "What is The Black Stallion?" The correct title is worth 2 points, and answering the bonus question of "Who is the author?", "Who is Walter Farley?", the team would earn 1 extra point. Students must know the correct and complete title and author's first and last names to earn points. Battle of the Books Evaluation Form Battle of the Books Score Chart
