CELL ANALOGY BROCHURE

Due Dates:

Register analogy: Wednesday, September 3rd

Draft for editing: Thursday, September 25th Brochure: Friday, October 3rd

INTRODUCTION:

You are using an analogy when you state a comparison between two objects you perceive to be alike. Analogies are often used in Biology to help you understand complicated concepts. For example, the nucleus of a cell is often compared to the human brain. The brain controls the human and the nucleus controls the cell.

In this project, you will NOT be just describing a cell. Instead you will be making a travel brochure of cell function. You will draw analogies between the functions of the cell organelles and the functions of a place that someone can visit. In the Cell Hotel, for example, the nucleus is Mr. Norman Nucleus who is the general manager of the hotel. The front desk could represent the cell membrane where visitors need a reservation to check into the hotel.

DIRECTIONS

Ex. While staying at our resort, please remember to tip our Lysosome ladies generously. They are the best cleanup crew around. They use special digestive enzyme cleaning agents to destroy any dirt and grime!

COMPUTER CLASS COLLABORATION

This project will be done in collaboration with the Computer class. Mrs. Roberts will be giving instruction on Publisher and creating tri-fold brochures. Students will be given the opportunity to work on their cell brochure during their Computer class. Mrs. Roberts will advise you of her rubric for the Computer class portion of your work.

RESEARCH:

At least one Science class period will be spent researching your cell analogy project. Your textbook is a useful resource. The following websites will also help your research.

CREATIVITY  - 40 points

Your brochure should be attractive, colorful, humorous and easy to read. Remember you want people to visit your cell. The following rubric will grade your creativity:

Visual Appeal

The brochure is exceptionally attractive in terms of design, layout, neatness and graphics. There is no empty space. It includes at least 2 original drawings.

The brochure is attractive in terms of design and neatness. There is very little empty space. It includes at least 1-2 original drawings.

The brochure is acceptable though it may lack neatness. There is some empty space and little effort at balancing titles, columns and graphics. It includes only one original drawing.

The brochure is messy and poorly designed. There is a great deal of empty space. It does not include any original drawings.

Creativity & Humor

A very creative brochure idea. Uses clever or humorous analogies throughout the brochure.

A creative brochure idea. Uses some clever and/or humorous analogies.

Some creativity and some attempts at clever or humorous analogies.

Minimal creativity and humor noted in the brochure.

ORAL PRESENTATION  -  40 points

Your presentation should last 1-3 minutes (1 – Acceptable; 3 – Exceptional ). You should summarize the tour of your cell analogy. You may refer to one index card for cues. The following rubric will be used to grade your presentation:
